This last of the recordings I have of Vince’s band was made almost a year after the previous one, and with Nick Haywood replacing Gary and Dale Barlow replacing Paul, the band has a completely different complexion. By this time, demand had increased to the point that it was viable for them to play two shows a night, and so there are 5 sets for this one. The newspaper photo shown above was from a piece in the arts section published to coincide with Sydney shows held earlier in the year, the mics telling me it was taken at one of his Basement shows and comes from Bruce Viles’ collection. The article mentions that Vince was fond of the Peter Sellers quote used as the caption; a sentiment as valid today for any determined artist as it was then.

I can’t remember whether this show was a one off, but I only have a single recording and from my perspective it is uncomfortably uneven, especially at the beginning, so I suspect I was attempting to pull it into shape when I got a chance to turn away briefly from the PA mix. It is more settled and less lumpy at the end, but as usual, try listening past this to the music. I was also late hitting the record button at the beginning of the first show, so the truncated opening number is heard only in the full set file.
